Chapter Nineteen
Ragnar
She had ties to the sea kingdom, the king specifically. There was a strong possibility that he could be her godfather. Elisora, and her siblings, may be children of a merchant, but if adoption was like it was in his culture, then she became a princess the moment their father died. Caspian had to have prepared for it if he had her groomed since she was a child.
The way she carried herself and spoke made more sense to him. She had seemed more educated than other nomads he had met. But if she truly was a princess, why did she not present herself as one? Patience was not his strength, but he would wait. She was so close to telling him the afternoon before. But what would he do after she told him? She told him she had to return to her home. No one from the surface world had ever invaded the Oceanus Kingdom. Not since Atlantis.
Ragnar adjusted the saddle on the horse and tightened the packs of water on the sides. The horse whined and stomped his feet.
If Elisora returned, he would never see her again. A snarl came from his throat. That could not happen. It would not happen. He would make her his.
âIs everything alright, your Majesty?â
Her voice was melodic. She stood near, wrapped in a cloak and hood over her head. The copper waves that slipped down her chest blended in with the wakening sky. She held a cane in one hand, her knuckles white, with the reins of a horse in another.
âAll is well.â He could not worry her. She was already dealing with so much.
Ragnar approached her, extending his arm. Her brows furrowed against her golden skin. The paleness from near death was gone, and with that came relief.
âYour Majesty, I have a horse.â She tugged at the reins. The white horse attached shook its head with a whiny.
âYou are too weak to ride. You will ride with me. I already prepared the saddle.â She turned down his offer on the way, but not this time.
âI appreciate your thought, but I have ridden a horse in worse conditions.â
He easily saw the fatigue on her face. She had fallen asleep almost immediately after he returned her to the hut the previous evening and barely ate anything. His eyes cut behind her, where he saw Hadrian watching them closely. Soldiers informed him that Hadrian had spoken to her privately, which meant it was nothing good for the two of them.
âElisora, it was not a request. Either you ride in my saddle, or I will simply mount your horse.â Hadrian would not get in the way of their courting.
She sighed in defeat, dropping the reins and patting the horseâs nose. He took the cane from her, helping her into the stirrups and upon his black horse.
Since she had woken up, all he wanted was to touch her. It took her being limp in his arms, practically lifeless, to realize she was more than just a passing interest.
